Event Name: CIM Webcast: Scalability in the Data Center Including Media & Electronics Options
Primary Vendor: CIM Cabling Installation & Maintenance Magazine and PennWell Digital Media
Presentation Title: Scalability in the Data Center Including Media & Electronics Options
Description:
1) Synopsis of 10G Infrastructure
Optical connectivity contributes to the overall efficiency of the data center. Optical cable with OM3 fiber provides bandwidth capabilities that support legacy and future data rate applications such as 16G to 100G and beyond without having to re-cable. In addition, optical fiber cable optimizes pathway and space utilization to maintain proper airflow control and reduce thermal management issues, simplifies installation and testing as well as supports high electronic and patch panel densities.
2) Scalability for the SAN (Design Considerations and Recommended Topology for the SAN)
When designing one's Data Center infrastructure, there are several drivers that play into the decision making process, including standards compliance, moves adds and changes, new applications and increasing data rates and changes in system equipment. Additional factors are considered when addressing the needs of the high-density Storage Area Network (SAN) environment. This presentation addressed these considerations and the recommended design and solutions for the SAN.

Description: The protection of people, facilities, products and information is becoming increasingly critical for organizations often requiring coordination between those involved in traditional areas of protection and information security practitioners. The Alliance for Enterprise Security Risk Management and its founding members, ASIS International and ISACA commissioned Deloitte to conduct a global survey of convergence practices and the integration of security within the larger context of Enterprise Risk Management. This survey, combined with leading concepts developed by Deloitte and case studies, provides an interesting insight into the methods that organizations have used to enhance coordination and communication between security practitioners and integration of security into organization-wide risk identification and management activities.

Description: For years, Project Managers have been taught to identify, quantify and develop strategies for dealing with risks, yet risk management continues to be one of the weakest areas of project management. Risk lists kept in Excel spreadsheets with no direct correlation to the project plan become dusty artifacts created during planning and referenced only after the risks have occurred. What is a project manager to do to effectively manage risks in today’s environment?

Description: "ITIL/Data Center Fitness,” Joel DeNeuf, RCDD, iTRACS Corporation, Westchester, Illinois
While organizations invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in tools that monitor the health of applications, packet flow and dozens of other network parameters in their data centers, most completely ignore the foundation layer of those networks. Commonly referred to as Layer 1, the physical layer is where the cables, routers, switches, wall jacks and other such physical devices interconnect. If that layer is not healthy, then it’s going to negatively affect the performance and security of the network layers above it, no matter what tools and systems are operating.  That’s where ITIL can help.  ITIL is a set of best practices that delineates the various aspects needed to address in order to optimize the delivery of IT services.  It acts as both guidelines and a framework for implementation. It is critically important to have knowledge of, document and manage the physical layer, if you truly want to adhere to the principles set out in ITIL.  This presentation will teach corporate data centers how to lay out those practices step-by-step, and how they can be individualized to keep a network completely healthy.
“Maximizing Data Center Space,” John Passanante, RCDD/NTS Specialist, Christopher Johnston, PE, and Joseph O’Sullivan, Syska Hennessy Group, New York, New York
One of the challenges facing data center managers today is how to effectively distribute mechanical, electrical and IT infrastructure equipment to maximize the white space within a data center. This presentation will discuss these various systems and how to design an optimal layout of a data center, including positioning of high density equipment as a result of CFD modeling, to provide efficient power, cooling and cabling management and appropriate consideration for future expansion.

Description: “Optical Fiber, Data Center and Storage Applications,” Andrew Oliviero, OFS, Norcross, Georgia
This seminar will provide a basic introduction to fiber optics for data center applications, from the fundamentals of fiber technology to the latest developments for high-speed Fiber Channel and Ethernet applications. Recommendations on the optimal fiber choices for data center and SAN applications will be made through the use of detailed cost comparisons. Additionally, Oliviero will explain how the selection of important fiber parameters can be used to manage channel insertion loss for delivering high performance and reliable network needs today and tomorrow.
"Data Center Fire Safety Standards,” Gary Stanitis, Daikin America, Inc., Orangeburg, New York
This presentation will review the standards and codes that address fire safety in data centers and information technology rooms and areas. These would include NFPA70 (National Electrical Code®), NFPA75, NFPA76, TIA-942 and the emerging BICSI Data Center Standard. The objective is to clearly explain these various documents and how they fit together to provide the installer and end user with options on how to address fire safety from a construction and operational perspective.

Presentation Title: Data Center Hot Spots and Data Center Building Blocks
Presentation ID: BiCSi Course #6662
Presentation Vendor:
Triton Technology Systems and Leviton Voice & Data
Description: “Data Center Hot Spots,” Dan Gollahon, Triton Technology Systems, Inc., Tulsa, Oklahoma
Higher heat densities of new IT and telecommunications equipment often create hot spots in data centers. Sealing cable cutouts and perimeter penetrations is a first step in dealing with hot spots that has surprisingly quick results and an attractive financial return. Unsealed openings on the raised floor (such as cable cutouts) create “bypass airflow,” which is wasted conditioned airflow. Bypass airflow creates three undesirable conditions: (1) hot spots, (2) cooling unit incapacity and (3) latent cooling penalty. A variety of methods for sealing these openings are displayed and discussed during this presentation, including a financial analysis of payback for sealing openings in both a new and existing data center.
"Data Center Building Blocks,” Mark Guymon, RCDD/NTS Specialist, Leviton Voice & Data, Bothell, Washington
Data centers are becoming an increasingly critical element of an enterprise’s IT infrastructure. The new TIA/EIA-942 standard provides guidance on designing and building a data center, but it is primarily focused on data center cabling systems and cabling pathways. This presentation will discuss some of the other building blocks—power distribution, power quality, cooling, monitoring and more—that are critical elements of a data center’s infrastructure.

Presentation Vendor:
Corning Cable Systems
Description: “Data Center Structured Wiring,” Doug Coleman, Corning Cable Systems, Hickory, North Carolina
The data center is the central nervous system of data networks, in which downtime is not acceptable. The use of structured optical cabling is essential to facilitate error-free data transmission and ease the disruption of moves, adds and changes (MACs). Structured optical cabling also provides a migration path to higher data rates, such as 10 Gb/s and beyond. Optical fiber cabling offers the maximum physical layer performance relative to data rate distance capability, ease of installation, and more will be discussed.

Description: “Formulating User Expectations into Design Documents,” Walter Herring, RCDD/NTS/OSP Specialist, Bala Consulting Engineers, Inc., King of Prussia, Pennsylvania
One of the most difficult tasks as a design professional is interpreting an end user/customer’s ideas and expectations into a working set of construction documents. This presentation will cover the process of establishing effective IT infrastructure documents clients will want and can use.
"Data Center Design for this Millennium,” Wahid Nawabi, American Power Conversion, Olney, Maryland
In today’s tough economic conditions, IT executives are constantly challenged to find ways to reduce their overall company IT capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) budget while maintaining a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure to support their business needs. Within the enterprise IT, one area where drastic improvement could be achieved is data center physical infrastructure, which will be discussed in this presentation.
